Rosa Lee

A little house in a little town in Georgia
Take that country road across the tracks
The home place sits just a little back
Cedar post porch and a wishing well full of dreams
Birth place and the home of sweet Rosa Lee

Days of the old cafe have come and gone
But those memories are like an old sweet song
And the stories they'll go on and on
And it's sad to say
But that's the way it should be
Sweet memories and sweet stories of Rosa Lee

Oh Rosa Lee
Oh Rosa Lee
The center of a close knit family
She had her own way of thinking and a way with words
She loved the songs of the mockingbird

Oh Rosa Lee
I know it's true
Nobody ever got one over on you

Festivals and friends
I thought those good times would never end
She had a love for life
Her children and the Chinaberry

I remember a story
That granny told me one time
About back in the days of the cafe
There was this man who would come in every day
And he would bring her fresh bread
And granny would ask that man
She said son, did you bring me fresh bread today
And he'd say, yes ma'am

Granny got to looking at the bread one day
And she wasn't sure that it was fresh
But she knew that man went to the local store
Before he came to see her everyday
So the next morning
Granny got up bright and early
And she walked down to the local store
Armed and dangerous with a magic marker
And she went to the bread section
And she proceeded to put little black marks
On all those loaves of bread
And later that day
The bread man came in
And he loaded granny's shelves up

And granny said to that man
She said son
Did you bring me fresh bread today
And he said, yes ma'am
Well, granny proceeded to point out to him
Those little black marks on the side of that bread

And a few years went by
And a man came into the cafe one day
And he sat down
And he said hello Ms. Jackson
He said, did you know that you taught me
One of the most valuable lessons in my life
And granny turned around
And she said, do I know you
And he said, I used to be your bread man

And that story
Made me think of something
That granny did so often

She could teach you a lesson and never say a word
She loved the songs of the mockingbird

Oh Rosa Lee
I know it's true
Nobody ever got one over on you

Now granny never liked to hear the freight trains blow
Said it made her think of all the friends she used to know
Now I guess I'm gonna do the same
When I hear the whistle of that lonesome train

Oh Rosa Lee
Oh Rosa Lee
The center of a close knit family
She had her own way of thinking and a way with words
She loved the songs of the mockingbird

Oh Rosa Lee
I know it's true
Nobody ever got one over on you

The Festivals and friends
I Thought those good times would never end
She had a love for life
Her children and the Chinaberry

She had a love for life
Her children and the Chinaberry

Oh Rosa Lee
Oh Rosa Lee
