See Me (Spoken Word)

The mist blows across the yard
As you lay beside me, eyes shut
Mind flown elsewhere
(Perhaps in blissful ignorance)
Softly-strewn silver tints the air
I breathe it in seeking comfort; seeking solace from this same air
I feel I can no longer fill my body with
I am so tired of being held hostage in a world that
Is no longer mine
So tired of sleeping but never getting rest
My dreams would never allow that

I tell you all of it when you awake
Yet all you say
Is that your dreams are made of the same stuff I am

The mist moves, fills the magnolia tree
And nothing else moves so determinedly, yet tentatively
The silver mixes with dark green, veined leaves
And bright red seeds, bringing me back to when I was younger
And truly alive; why is it that
The more time we spend in this world the more we are
Stolen away by something we all know but cannot name

In a few crucial moments
When the bright golden light slowly engulfs everything
I do not want it to taint your view of me
I may shine golden now
But see me just as well in the shadows
