Lemon Tree
Our lemon tree was empty when we left
We were holding in our breath as we moved along the road
On my way out the driveway for the last time I looked back
And I saw the dog run 'round the yard
I almost cried but I was laughing to myself
about the neighbor next to us
Who took a bucket and a clipper with her to our tree
The smell of lemon brings it back to me -
a symphony of shaking branches
and the fruit hitting the ground underneath
What does forgiveness sound like?
Like saying "Goodbye" for the last time?
What does forgiveness look like?
Like a single flower poking through a chain link wire?
What does forgiveness feel like?
Does it live inside of you? Does it live inside of me?
I still can see your feet up on the porch
Stoned and reading articles while the screen catches the flies
I pull my hair back talking about myself, was always talking to myself
And you were always keeping quiet
The hammock swayed and you laid there till the night fell
then got up to pour a glass of gin
And bring me back a glass of wine
How come your eyes only lift into the night?
When the sun goes down you seem happier than when it shines
What does forgiveness taste like?
Like the sap that's dripping down the maple tree?
What does forgiveness smell like?
Like the morning after rain washes the leaves?
What does forgiveness feel like?
Does it live inside of you? Does it like inside of me?
Love in the wake of infinite space
as I try to imagine a life without you
A life without you...
Tell me what you need
I'll do most anything...
I'll have your children, I'll keep my word
I'll be your version of me
Just tell me what you need
I'll do most anything...
I'll sit at the top of the stairs
I'll play the crossword as my hand brushes your hair
I'll watch your eyes while you sleep
I'll pull the window down out of breeze
I'll take the blanket off me
I'll wrap it around your feet
I'll open the blinds
I'll catch every sun
I'll jump into the coldest river
I'll lay in the yard and watch the stars turn to glitter
I'll give your heart a squeeze
I'll give most anything
Just tell me what it is you need
I'll do it all with no strings
Sweet, sweet honey
Sweet, sweet baby
Sweet, sweet honey
Sweet, sweet baby
We were holding in our breath as we moved along the road
On my way out the driveway for the last time I looked back
And I saw the dog run 'round the yard
