Humans at Play

Every day
I see my fellow humans at play
In roundabout ways
Searching out a morsel of praise
But looking out
At all these victories and routs
I can't make out
Who has won or lost the bout

And I can't make sense of their arguments
The troubles that live in their heads
Cankerworms that feed on their sense

If I had a choice
I would listen to every voice
And cut through the noise
All the little tactics employed
But the money talks
From the streets to the ballot box
Ticking clocks
Mark out minutes we sell like they're stocks

But a friendship is not an investment
No assessment can tell you its worth
In sentiment there is no true north

So put them aside
All the little fibs and lies
Speak your mind
Let me know what goes on inside
I hope you see
I just want to know you're here with me
Want to feel like we're free to be

So every day
We'll watch our fellow humans at play
Weeding out
Every last morsel of doubt
And with the years
We'll share what is left of our fears
Grow together the way that we're meant to do
Just me and you
