Family Tree

Once, the blossom would come every year
And the leaves would be so green
And I would run out to the backyard to be a child again
When the winter came, still it stood so proud
And it was the only thing I could be sure of
Now the bark is torn, and this old chestnut is just no good

And a voice says
This family tree is being felled today
And everything you thought was so
Was sold with the land
The new owner has no plans
This family tree began to grow small
Through years of abuse, it started to fall
And so the family tree ends with me
And so the family tree ends abruptly

I remember running to Nanna's house
If I was in need of comfort
When I was afraid of my father's temper
And I wanted to feel loved
And the man who taught me how not to behave
Was the same man who didn't teach me how to shave

And a voice says
This family tree is being felled today
And everything you thought was so
Was sold with the land
The new owner has no plans
This family tree began to grow small
Through years of abuse, it started to fall
And so the family tree ends with me
And so the family tree ends abruptly

And so the family tree ends with me
And so the family tree ends with me
