Nihilism Gives My Life Meaning

Remember lying on your back
Face tickled by the grass
As you gaze at all the stars
And try to feel like it's all connected
And we belong

And it's fun to sing about
The end of the world
It keeps me distracted from
Wondering what we have to lose

And terrified I try not to look away
Take a fist full of dirt
And try to stay
Grounded

As I let my mind wander
And the mental walls drop
I remember how huge it all is
And how much I contain that has
Nothing to do with who I am

And I take a deep breath and start
Tracing constellations with my eyes
Imposing order that generations have
Relied on before

And terrified I try not to look away
Take a fist full of dirt
And try to stay
Grounded

As the sky looks more two dimensional
And I can put whatever is me
Back inside for another night
And we belong

The next morning I wake up
And I buy some stuff
Probably hoping it will help me to define
My relationship with life

And slowly my things and my to do lists
Stack back up into walls
And I feel contained
Once again forgetting that there's nothing real to end
Nothing real that I understand
