Thief

The thief broke ground
And stole the midnight jewels
Sold them with a story
To all the other fools

The thief was vindicated
By the souls he was saving
Chipping at the headstones
Our future, engraving

Rain fell in the valley
The school was washed away
The world was torn apart with grief
Went on stealing anyway

Canary in the darkness
Chose not to sing
But people craved black diamonds
More than anything

Men in golden towers
Set out to defend
The thief and all he stood for
They called him a friend

Fire raged the forest
And the heat, it felt like sin
The thief and all he worshiped
Found new stories to spin

A million tiny creatures
Walked the dusty land
They fell through the cracks
Drilled into plains of sand

Some said he was a hero
Others called him thief
The mother forgave him
Despite the pain and grief

Build a life on stolen goods
Can't see the trees for the woods
The thief must be tried
But the thief already died
