Smoky Doldrums

Forgotten linen dishtowel
Limp and grimy on the line
Solitary scrub jay
Seeks other ways to dine
The red clay bricks below
Are soft and gray with fallen ash

When will it end?
Send us rain
Give us air
Give us west wind

The fires to the east of us
Continue to rage strong
The dim red sun throws feeble light
The shadows are all wrong
My window partly blocks
The thick and smoky yellow air

When will it end?
Send us rain
Give us air
Give us west wind

The air is chill and clammy
And we urgently need rain
Being cooped up inside
Is slowly driving me insane
The flowers and the vegetables
Are out there well confused

When will it end?
Send us rain
Give us air
Give us west wind
