Some Goodness In My Life

So many long years ago God must have noticed then
The path a boy was traveling, how bad that path would end
So, He whispered to an angel "This one's running out of time
Go down and stand across his path. Put some goodness in his life"

A pretty face, with charm and grace, is sure to catch his eye
Your tender words, your loving ways will make him realize
What he fought so hard to understand through bitterness and strife
Was simply that he needed a little goodness in his life

Fewer are the years left to us than the ones we've left behind
Whether diamonds or rust await, in those years we will find
When the gatekeeper tallies up, I'll gladly pay the toll
And a thousand times moreover for the goodness in your soul

We never felt our youth go by; the days were all so full
It seems the stuff of our lives then was kids, careers and bills
Battles we won, a few we lost, yet even from the start
You were the anchor of my soul, with the goodness in your heart

The years we spent and tears we spent, so many yet so few
Yet through those shifting sands of time, my rock was always you
Now the kids are gone, grandchildren grown, again it's just we two
The only thing that hasn't changed is the good surrounding you
