Beginner's Mind

I once knew a karate master
His belt was faded and frayed
Once black, it turned back to white
That was the point, he said

It served as a reminder
To go back to the start
Always be a learner
And keep a humble heart

The more I know I realize
I've got to keep a beginner's mind
The farther I go, the more I find
I've got to keep a beginner's mind

The aged theologian, renowned across the world
Gave his final teaching in the great lecture hall
All the books that he'd written, and lofty things he'd been shown
All boil down to this, he said: Jesus loves me, this I know

The more I know I realize
I've got to keep a beginner's mind
The farther I go, the more I find
I've got to keep a beginner's mind

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities
But in the expert's mind there are few
