The Desert

Last night we were pale New Yorkers
With only ideas to show
Collaging our thoughts
On to scraps of paper

This morning we parted reluctantly
Letting our hands fall away
Saying it's not goodbye
It's see you later

You steered the car away slowly
Maybe having second thoughts
Then I saw you adjusting the mirror
Saw you turn the radio on

They say the west is vast and unfiltered
Lonely and brutal and free
Patient and uncomplicated
A waking reverie

The desert is all-consuming
It can topple a man
Or be a guide and saviour

When your hope for the future
Is slowly becoming a demon inside
It's a guru and emancipator

Last night I heard you thinking aloud
You didn't know I was there
You spoke to the open window
Tested the night air

You said the west is vast and unfiltered
Lonely and brutal and free
Patient and uncomplicated
And it's where I wanna be

We travel in search of the
Promising flickers of light
We do what we can
And what we're able

At takeoff we gather ourselves
At landing we sigh
Arrive home to sit at
The kitchen table

We tell our stories to save our skin
Talk it out until dawn
We write our minds like a poem
Play our hearts like a song

They say the west is vast and unfiltered
Lonely and brutal and free
Patient and uncomplicated
A waking reverie

You said the west is vast and unfiltered
Lonely and brutal and free
Patient and uncomplicated
And I'll take you there with me
