Cookie Drive

Papa had a brand-new Mustang auto, model year '65
With a white rag top and a red fire-engine shine
Black-and-white Zenith television and a favorite easy chair
And a Sears remote to open the garage
Mama was big in the Girl Scouts, baby
She made those brownies smile
her bedspread had a gold trefoil design
Everybody knew when the call went out
For cookie volunteers
Mama was sure to be the first in line
And I say What What What do I hear
Coming up the road
On a clear blue day in the spring of '65
And I say No, no, nobody knew that
Tragedy would unfold
In the Indianapolis Girl Scout Cookie drive
The Indianapolis Girl Scout Cookie drive
The troop was smokin' in 65, no one could resist
Those sashes, badges and cute little uniforms
So many cookies sold we stored them out in our garage
200 piles stacked high upon the floor
Now thin mints everybody likes
So cool and dark and smooth
And shortbreads make me want to jump and shout
I love those sweet vanilla crèmes as long as it is clear
That they're not really made with real girl scouts
On a Sunday morning, Mama gone to church
Papa in his easy chair,
A pack of Lucky Strikes and the Sunday Star
We were all glued to the Looney Tunes
Over the hum of the Frigidaire
Down the block we could all hear Mama's car
There was no mistake, we could always tell
When Mama hit the gas
The telltale sound of that pony engine's roar
Papa looked up from the funny section and
One eyebrow went up:
"You think she recalls what's out there on the floor?"
And I say What What What do I hear
Coming up the road
On a clear blue day in the spring of '65
And I say No, no, nobody knew that
Tragedy would unfold
In the Indianapolis Girl Scout Cookie drive
The Indianapolis Girl Scout Cookie drive
We heard the garage door start to open as
Mama made the turn.
That Sears remote control was working fine
Her left foot tapping to the gospel station, yeah
Mama felt the power
As she gunned the engine and
Barreled up the drive
And oh that awful feeling as Mama saw too late
The sound of Goodyears squealing
As she stood on the brakes
That pretty red mustang hit the cookies
About 6 miles an hour
Don't sound like much
But she must have pulverized them all
Crumbs went flying in all directions
As the boxes did explode
But the car stopped just before it hit the wall
Mama sat stunned as the gospel station
Sweetly sang "Amen."
Took a deep breath, she smiled, and patted back her hair
Called to us as we stood dumb in the doorway
"Think of what we'll save
On crumbs for the crusts for the pies for the County Fair."
And I say What What What do I hear coming up the road
On a clear blue day in the spring of '65
And I say No, no, nobody knew that
Lemonade would be served at the Indianapolis Girl Scout Cookie drive
