Cathedral

I am building a cathedral
Out beyond the towering pines
In a clearing ringed by scrub oak
And sweet honeysuckle vine
Though my hands are cracked and weary
And there ain't no moon or stars
Still I work there in the evening
Hammer ringing through the dark

There my burdens, I will lay down
There my worries, I'll release
There the lightning in my head
May flash, but far away
Like in the summer heat
There the days that come unceasing
Fall like raindrops on a lake
And I will lay down in the soft grass
With my feet crossed
Upon those muddy banks

I am building us an ark
For to sail across the ocean
I don't know when she'll be worthy
But I know where we are going
I can see the marsh grass waving
And the sunset on the pier
In the distance old blue mountains
Where the cardinal's singing clear

There my burdens, I will lay down
There my worries, I'll release
There the lightning in my head
May flash, but far away
Like in the summer heat
There the days that come unceasing
Fall like raindrops on a lake
And I will lay down in the soft grass
With my feet crossed
Upon those muddy banks

I am building a cathedral
Out beyond the towering pines
In a clearing ringed by scrub oak
And sweet honeysuckle vine
Well it ain't no land of Canaan
It's just four walls in my head
A thousand miles away from why
I lie awake in bed
