New Year's Day

To free the mind, pull the top of the skull away
Let it fall through a sewer grate
All the cluster box unit keys and electric tape
All the columnists and spinner bait

I need the quick-action clips like a blitz attack
Like I'm an acrobatic jumping jack
Like life's a magic-hat-and-rabbit act
You used the back half of the teens
to backpack Greece and read Kerouac
I think I'll always be too young for that

If you can reach this line from where you're at, say something funny
It can feel so small to be anybody
To free the mind, pull the top of the skull away
Wipe the look off your face, it's New Year's Day!

Now you spend your time to look for diamonds left around the house
And all you find are dimes lost in the couch
It's not a thing I'd ever joke about
But every gruesome thing that you did
left a note on your fridge, and you know that now
You read 'em every time you're checking out

But you can move the magnetic letters now
to say something funny, like,
"It can feel so small to be anybody"
Squeeze the sides, twist the top, pop the pill away
Lose the cap down the drain, call it New Year's Day
