The Jug
I woked up today
Lookin' down Tennessee, hey hey hey
Walkin' up 40
Shakin' out blues, breakin' up blaze and, hey hey hey
Walkin' up 40
Then my faith, then my faith
Broke them blues away, hey hey hey
When along came Jesus in a pickup truck
Said "Drop that nation, pick up that jug"
We swung up the levee to the riverside
Picked up a heavy-rollin' belter and his heavy-pourin' bride
He turned out the sound
Lit up the fire down inside
While Jesus made a reckonin' on the banjo on the side
I said "I ain't know to play this thing"
He said "Just begin. Breathe deep. Let it sing."
Why don't I get us a good gig at the Lafayette
Why don't I get us a showcase at the CC
"It never quite moves in a room like the river
I'm tellin' you soon y'gonna see things my old way"
And I do today
Now sittin' clear some twenty years, I thank the Lord above
That I dropped that bottle, picked up that jug
