Sam's Bar

Outside, the ghosts of us ride
Back where the neon goes black
We sigh and follow up right
My hand in your back pocket
"Good luck" at the taillights
Empty brass hits the ground
We duck into the Circle L
Before they up and turn around, well

Inside, the ghosts of us buy
A map and highways out
Couldn't stand the weather
Said they might go south
Then "we can hardly see - the roads up here
Go out at sundown"
Then all us four, together
"Sure is dark in this town"

Out back the ghosts of us ask
For a smoke and a glass
"Make hers three, make mine neat
And make her marry me"
We trace and the jukebox plays
Songs of time and highways
One hand in her back pocket
One hand on the wheel

It's been some years since we put up
These jagged letters on the ceiling, right
The roads have weathered better than us
But now there's pictures in the lines
So make your mark and drive

One night upon a sign
Late at Sam's and thin on time
Brushed away the fall
Made our mark and now it's all
Up in between them lines
The same three stars in the same dark night
Drawn by candlelight
All are dim but one is bright
