The Possum

She held it in her arms, carried it into the woods
Walked until her tears dried beneath her raincoat's hood
She'd found it on her porch the previous night
Perhaps it felt safe in the kitchen window's light

When she filled in the hole she left its head til last
Somewhere, somehow, hoping for some new and urgent gasp
Of breath, bring strength, come soaring out of death
But look into his eyes; there's nothing left

Feels strange to one day not know something exists
And for the very next to hurt in parting with it
Now deep within the soil, if you come back in time
That possum will have turned into another mighty pine
