Scorn

I begged the men to disappear that night
I begged them all to leave my girl alone
I pleaded on my knees and tried to fight
But to the judge, her fate was set in stone
She looked at me in panic as they fled
The guards just spat, she was accused of theft
They stripped her naked in the streets of dread
And beat my girl until her soul had left

When dust turned clear the guards thеn set me free
I ran to her and raisеd her twitching head
Her emerald eyes still pierced through me
Until I knew my little girl was dead
My little girl was dead

I took her from that wretched place of scorn
Through the crowd, within my arms I carried her

And dreamt of when her gentle heart was born
Once at home, I cleaned and dressed and buried her
They never saw the terror in her face
They took my girl because they could
Day and night I wish to take her place
As any other honest father would

I once believed the gods were meant to serve
Not some hounds that crave young flesh to take
They promised safety that we all deserve
And yet the body, mind and soul still break
The more I age I feel my time is near

And soon, at last, I will join her in rest
A decade passed and still I hear
The echo of her cracking chest
