65 Years or So
There must have been something about the old man
That drew me to him that night
Something about his eyes I think
Just didn't seem to be right
One minute he seemed happy
The next he looked like he could cry
So I walked up and introduced myself
And asked if I could walk with him a while
He said walk with me son I'm not going too far
65 years or so
Back to the time when my lady was alive
The lady that I loved so
They're tearing down her house today
It's been empty all these years
And I just have to try one more time
To find a way from there to here
Well I didn't understand what the old man meant
So I questioned him about it
He said sometimes I hear her calling me
And tonight she's almost shouting
A fever took her just one week
Before were to be wed
And I can never remember the good
Without remembering the bad
We arrived at the house a decrepit old place
On the far outskirts of town
Arrived just as the wrecking ball
Was preparing to knock it down
It must have been beautiful when it was new
A Victorian dream in stone
And I would have said so to the old man
But I turned and he was gone
Well the wrecking ball had begun it's swing
I didn't have time to shout
For I could see the old man standing
On the front porch of the house
With a smile on his face like he just couldn't wait
To have it all falling down about
And he seemed to be holding someone
But I just couldn't make it out
Well it was a full hour later
That they took his dead body away
The Sunday papers would get the story
And call it a tragedy
But as I walked away I turned my head
Almost knowing what I'd see
For there on the wreckage of the old home
Was the old man waving to me
Well I knew it was him even though he had changed
For he now looked younger than me
And standing by his side was a beautiful girl
As beautiful as any I've seen
And as they faded from my sight
I knew just where they'd go
For he said he wasn't going back too far
Just 65 years or so
Back to the time when his lady was alive
The lady that he loved so
And I knew that he'd reached heaven
And I turned away to go home
That drew me to him that night
Something about his eyes I think
Just didn't seem to be right
One minute he seemed happy
The next he looked like he could cry
So I walked up and introduced myself
