Dog Named T

There's an old man in a straw-back rocker pouring peanuts in his Coke
Driving 35 thru here is always such a joke
Man I'm in a hurry
I got somewhere else to be
And there he sits on that storefront porch on highway 33

I was runnin' low on gas and I needed a place to stop
So I pulled up to that single pump and flipped my gas cap lock
My boss is mad
My wife has had just about enough of me
And next to that old man is an old dog sound asleep

Hey what kind of dog is that I asked as I walked by
A sleepin' one he said with mischief in his eye
Why don't you grab a drink and set a spell if you got some time to kill
I'm not sure why but I blurted out
You know I think I will

His lazy dog was black and brown not really much to see
What's his name I asked the man and he just told me, T
Like sweet tea or Tee Martin
And he just shook his head
Well tell me how you spell it then and this is what he said

His name is T and you can spell it any way you like
He don't care 'cause he's a dog and he can't read or write
Now you can complicate it if you want but if it's up to me
I'd start with T and I'd stop right there
'Cause T is all you need

I thought this old man is crazy but as we sat there for a while
We rocked and talked and he made me laugh and he flashed his crusty smile
We sipped our drinks as cars sped by on highway 33
Just me and him on that old porch with his old dog named T

His name is T and you can spell it any way you like
He don't care 'cause he's a dog and he can't read or write
Now you can complicate it if you want but if it's up to me
I'd start with T and I'd stop right there
'Cause T is all you need

It's getting close to 5 he said and I best be gettin' home
He stood and locked that storefront door
And he said hey T c'mon
I said hey I never paid you for the cold drink or the gas
He said that ain't all this life's about so don't you worry 'bout that

As I watched him toddle off that porch with his old dog named T
I realized how happy a simple life could be
So I cranked my car and pulled out on the highway 33
And somehow goin' 35 was fast enough for me

His name is T and you can spell it any way you like
He don't care 'cause he's a dog and he can't read or write
Now you can complicate it if you want but if it's up to me
I'll start with T and I'll stop right there
'Cause T is all I need
