The Desert

Cold winter gone by
A time when the birds would cease to fly
Though many have gone and caught my eye
The wells have all begun to dry
In the eve of my wilting mind

Once a great warrior, now I lie
Awake at night, as the pigeons fly by

As the hounds of hell began to bellow
I grinned and laughed and sank below
I didn't understand what was wrong with me then
They ripped, and they shred; the Earth soaked red

I swam in a sea of my conceit
Not realizing that the end was at my feet

Willows and birds, their songs have sung
My wilting mind and dying eye, the smoking gun
Now, here I am, a man with everything gone
But I can't sing that same old song

I can't keep singing the same old song
I can't keep singing that same old song
And I can't keep singing that same old song
And I can't keep singing
No, I can't be singing that same old song
That same old song
No, I can't be singing that same old song
That same old song
That same old song

And as the birds begin to sing again
I think back and remember when
I loved myself for who I was
Looking back, self respect was the cause

Finally a new day has broken
And my dreaded words have all been spoken
And I could look passed all of my flaws
But along the way, I forgot who I was
