Trim the Sails

On Chicago day we rode the trolley out to Jackson Park
We stayed til after dark
I thought we'd never reach the end
There rising from the ashes a White City proudly gleamed
Like nothing we'd ever seen before
And I doubt we will again

We're living in a world that's moving way too fast
The city of the future's gone and forgotten its past
We're living in a time where time itself has gone off of the rails
The winds of change make me feel strange
I wish we'd trim the sails

With dynamos and magic bulbs they found a way to banish the night
Oh the White City shone so brightly out across Lake Michigan
Then I saw you on the midway
Playing cards with the Turkish dancer
I called but you didn't answer
You had diamonds in your eyes

We're living in a world that's moving way too fast
The city of the future's gone and forgotten its past
We're living in a time where time itself has gone off of the rails
The winds of change make me feel strange
I wish we'd trim the sails
