The River

I am called by the river
The river is cold and I shiver
As I bend down to drink its water
The lights unfold bright as ever

It started out as a fire and extended
A weary old town and a burial wake
Was it breathing underwater
That got us home safe
Got us home safe or cost us all faith?
Face down anyway, hunted down game

Where are you now Ally?
Where are you oh lord

And buried by the lilies there's a stone with their names
Orphan with no family, it's a cold bone grave
And I fall heavy as the forest, heavy as the winter
Falls on the memories of the poor old brains
As they wash it down with whiskey
And they wear brave face
But I don't hold like I should do
I feel it all slipping away
