The Sunshine Song

I was twisting branches to impress the other kids
And I made flowers look the way that I thought other people might like
But I found solace in the words that came from my own sticks
And I heard voices in the air say these are pretty twigs

A long time ago
I was a tree
(I was a tree with flowers in a range of colours but)
But now my lovely sunshine song exists
So let's all pray that we make our songs like this

I was cleaning yesterday and throwing out the trash
And in the bins I saw there was some value in the toys that I had
So I took them out and stared
At Mr Teddy Bear
Wondering if you were ever mine
But what a silly question he said
Because teddy bears don't talk to humankind

A long time ago
I was a tree
I was swinging in the breeze but then
I started to begin
To sing
And now my lovely sunny song exists
And now my lovely sunny song exists
So let's all pray that we make our songs like this

And will the reveries of melodies
That whistled through the beetles and the bees
Be nothing but the memories of happy leaves and sleeping by the sea
But then the sun he spoke to me and said
That "I've been shining for you all along"
And so I wrote a piece for him a said
"I wrote a poem called The Sunshine Song"
