this song is not a metaphor

I've been thinking about caterpillars
And the things they don't know
All they do is eat on leaves
And then they gradually grow

When they pop out of their eggs
Do they have any clue
What their life will have in store for them
And what they will do?

They don't know where they're headed
They don't know where they're from
And they have absolutely no idea what they will become
These little wormies metamorphosize into something more
But I wanna make it clear this song is not a metaphor

I just think caterpillars don't know what's going on
They're dopey as heck, don't know why we respect
Something that can't do long division, write petitions
Or pay with a check (and I can do all of those things)

I just think caterpillars don't know what's going on
I can eat leaves, and I can also climb trees
And I can also conceive of what I'll be in three years
A keeper of bees (a beekeeper)

I'd like to see a caterpillar do that
