The Prince & the Rose
Through thicket and bramble, the Prince he did ride
Seeking as he rambled to place at his side
A rose of such beauty, it never would fade
Nor wither, nor die, and thus has he bade
Farewell to his castle, his fortress of stone
Vowing to return, bearing such a rose
Vowing to return, bearing such a rose
Night and day did he wander, year and month did he ride
Finding wonder on wonder that had laid deep inside
And seven years later, he came to a briar
Where the brambles did glisten and warm his desire
For there deep within he could see through the flames
There glowed the bright flower, and the Rose was her name
There glowed the bright flower, and the Rose was her name
You are the one I've sought
On your thorns me heart is caught
I fear you Prince, said Rose
I fear you are my foe
With his bright words he cleaved through the briar
To where the rose grew, with her fragrance and fire
And braving her burrs, and her thorns sharpened fine
He culled the fragile flower saying: thou shalt be mine
I care not for the cuts of your thorns if I fall
For thou shall bloom again, within my castle walls
Thou shall bloom again, within my castle walls
But the Rose of the briar does not bloom within walls
She loses her fire, she loses her all
And a chalice of gold set on linen so fine
Cannot keep her from wilting, and fading in time
And her fragrance is lost by the rising of the dawn
Leaving Prince to bear the cost, and the cut of her thorn
Leaving Prince to bear the cost, and the cut of her thorn
I know of princes who suffer no pain
And I know of roses who bloom time and again
For the Prince he can nourish and so feed the Rose
And she flowers the brighter for being left in repose
For the wild Rose lives longer, when left on it briar
And the Prince he can bask in her fragrance and fire
Prince he can bask in her fragrance and fire
You are the one I've sought
In your heart me thorns are caught
Do you fear me Prince? Said Rose
Do you fear I am your foe
Seeking as he rambled to place at his side
A rose of such beauty, it never would fade
Nor wither, nor die, and thus has he bade
Farewell to his castle, his fortress of stone
Vowing to return, bearing such a rose
Vowing to return, bearing such a rose
