Room for One

The crowd assembled on the shore. We heard a ship was coming in
To take us to the promised land, away from bleached and bloody sand
Some came from the mountain top, saddened by the futile watch
Some came from the city streets, sick and tired of the techno beat
Some were dying from too much life, some were living from too much death
Most were playing a waiting game, hoping that nothing would be the same

Under a moon in the dead of night, a small rowboat came into sight
"I hear you're looking for the promised land. Get on board take my hand"

"The boat is too small", we all replied. "At most there's only room for one
But we are thousands and thousands more, stuck upon this sandy shore"
"There's plenty of room it takes no time"; the captain pointed down the line
"I promised what you never knew, so how do you know what to do"
Some began to shake with rage and some went down upon their knees
"You promised us love, you promised us peace, now we'll never get off this beach"

"You forget I came last spring. You said exactly the same things
What force keeps you holding on to wooden gods and a drifting sun?"

The captain walked back to his boat, turned and smiled in the rose grey dawn
"I will give you everything; remember this when I return next spring"
Some went back to the mountain top, closed their eyes, began the watch
Some went back to the city streets and danced along to the techno beat
But I remained upon the shore, the bloody sands, the screeching gulls
Perhaps I'll stay until next spring, so I'll remember everything he said

"It's a joke, a carnival, fit for children and animals
Leave your baggage, leave your dead, there's room for one", the captain said

"It's a joke, a carnival, fit for children and animals
Leave your baggage, leave your dead, there's room for one", the captain said
