Winter & Rivers

When the shops turn their lights out
We can walk to the old docks and see a true sky.
Say do you think we built this? did it take luck and time?
Then it seemed to get cold out like you
Handed me a locket with nothing inside
Said "don't fill it up with just anything you find"
We're a few flaws far from crazy
And one good dream away from mad

Everyone talks of winter like their trouble is
With the seasons the only things they know
That are always repeating.
But there's a different kindness,
A calm that in the heat we couldn't know
Remember how you said there are so many
Places that are vast, but far between?
Surely they will beg to take the place of
The rooms or skies that played your favorite scenes
Like the night you stopped to watch the train go by
and see the whole road stop and stack with light
All the dusty chatter made you nervous
We could always leave here
If we tried, if we try, if we try

I'm not trying to forget this
But i'm not keeping everything
I'm not trying to forget you
But I can tell it's happening
Even still

Everyone talks of rivers like a cleanliness or constant
Some reminder of tomorrows
Where they aren't so scared of drowning
But people drown in rivers,
Sometimes in almost nothing at all.
Like the night you got to watch the rain come in
And empty all the people off the street,
You could learn to love any of them
In the time
I take to fall asleep
You will buy a hundred different road maps
And meet a million people if you'd like
To a few your poetry comes easy
I would always trust you with my life

I should be leaving now,
Never meant to stick around so long
All the words fall short,
I'll wait for days that hold a song
I should be leaving now
Never meant to stick around so long
All the words fall short
I'll wait for days that hold their own
Against some constant pull of recollection

I'm not trying to forget this
But i'm not keeping everything,
I'm not trying to forget you
But i can tell it's happening even still

I should be leaving now
Never meant to stick around so long
All the words fall short
I'll wait for days that hold their own
I should be leaving now
Never meant to stick around so long
All the words fall short
I'll wait for days that hold their own
Against some constant
Pull of recollection
