Sawdust
Ezra
The idea is that there are these things
Memories, feelings, ideas
That were good in the past, but they continue forward
And they reoccur, moving with you through life
They stack up in their goodness
And that's what Sawdust is all about
This is the Sawdust tape
And what follows are my friends and their sawdusts
For me, it's this uh, really special smell of sawdust
I'd be like, playing in the garage while my grandpa was building a birdhouse
Or working in the garage with my dad in high school
Or now, hanging out with my friend Conner and building stuff in his shed
That smell of sawdust just uh, just keeps coming around
So for me it's that smell and those memories and the feeling
Whatever else I can make with my hands
Gabe
This is Gabe
And my sawdust is the feeling of getting in the car
And getting ready to drive on a long roadtrip
I just really like the feeling of being able to be by myself
And uh, reflect on things and talk to people on the phone and listen to my music
And it's just super relaxing for me, so I always get that good feeling
When I'm uh, about to go on a long trip or coming back from school or going to visit a friend
Or anything like that, so, but ... I just think it's pretty cool, so
Sarah
My sawdust is blisters and splinters in my feet
When I was little, I would get blisters on my feet whether playing soccer
Or splinters from climbing around things barefoot
And I still get blisters and splinters in my feet rather often
Matthew
My sawdust is hot glue
Wilson
My sawdust is the feeling of heavy eyelids
From one of my first memories of granddad holding my eyelids open
In a drive-in movie to see Cars
To holding up my own heavy eyelids while driving home late at night
Or pulling all-nighters with my dearest friends
Hannah
My sawdust is coffee
Because whenever I was little I would, uh
Go out to Starbucks with my older sister and I would always wait for the day that I could drink coffee
So then whenever it got there, it was a good day
And my dad always makes coffee for my family at Christmas time
Reminds me of my grandmother as well
Josh
My sawdust is going on a walk, grabbing a leaf, and picking around the stem
I remember, in the first house I remember living in
We were walking to church because it was so close
And then I just remember grabbing a leaf from the magnolia tree
And then the other day, I remembered that as I was doing it
Going on a walk in Florida
Jeremy
My sawdust is watching a movie on a rainy day
Growing up in Florida we had a lot of rainy days
So naturally we watched a lot of movies
Um, and sure our plans might be cancelled and we couldn't do everything we wanted to
But we still looked forward to going inside and watching a movie
Um, and that just goes to show that rain can ruin a lot of things
But it can't ruin you from having a good time
Caleb
My sawdust would have to be, uh my bruised knees
Um, as a kid I was always very clumsy and my knees were constantly bruised
But as I've gotten older I've realized that your knees never stop bruising
And I go about life and check my knees and see a ... see a new bruise
And just think back to my childhood and how I was always playing in the yard
And I would stumble over something and bruise my knees
And not realize it until later when I got a bath or something
But that's my sawdust
Abbi
My sawdust is storms because they're a theme of cleansing in my life
When I was little, the first time I remember getting in really big trouble
I was dancing in my driveway and there was lightning and thunder outside
And my mom came outside and asked what in the world I was doing
And I ... didn't really have answer
But ever since rain on the beach, seeing it from far away, seeing it in the sky
Um, it's always been beautiful to me
Cam
My sawdust is the sound of either a washer or a dryer, as soon as you start it
I remember in my great-grandma's house
The first thing you walked into was her laundry room in the garage
And you could hear it going throughout the entire house
Even in the attic, which is where we slept when we went and visited her
And then in Colorado, my room was on the other side of the laundry room
And I remember you could just hear somebody opening the hatch and then
They would close the hatch, press the button and it would make that like
BOOMWOP
And then it would like, start chugging along
It's really comforting, I don't know why I just slept better
Um yeah, that's my sawdust
Andrew
My sawdust is when you stick your hand out the window driving down the road
And the wind pulls your hand back and then you push
And its like a fight
It reminds me of when I was in the backseat, and my parents allowed us to roll our windows down
Or whenever, in high school, we had the car and it was boiling hot in there
And we rolled down the windows on a summer day
Michaela
My sawdust is walking barefoot with a friend on an asphalt road
And that feeling of just peace and tranquility
And knowing that you might not remember the specific moment
Or what you talked about
But knowing that you spent time with them, and
You were really listening to them
The idea is that there are these things
