The Grindstone

We're living out our days like children's toys
All wound up and half annoyed
Good little girls and boys

I've tried so hard to make amends
With all the worthless time we're forced to spend
Toiling

It's gonna get us in the end
Still we're working like a bunch of tools
Will we ever get the break that was promised soon?

You know the day will come we're set aside
All used up and broke open wide
How we tried for a slice of the pie

Still I just can't seem to understand
The rewards and the punishments
When does our happiness land?

It's gonna get you in the end
Still you're climbing like a bunch of fools
Will you ever get the fix that they promised you?

Was it worth the trade we made
Our best years for a moment in the shade?
With all of those aches and pains

The grindstone only spins in place
First it takes your nose and then your face
