Orangutans
A midsummer heatwave
A day out at the zoo
A suburban carpark
That we drove to
Queuing for ages
In the blazing hot sun
Waiting to see the
Orangutans
I watched that baby climbing
And it looked like he might fall
It was all grace and no danger or fear at all
Our faces pressed up
Against the glass
I just had a second
To take my glance
Before the next one
Some other person could see
Movements so graceful
So peaceful and free
I saw the long haired old boy
And I thought 'what would he say?'
If the worry for the small ones kept him awake?
Now its winter I'm on the phone
Something wild
Has happened
So I remember
The moment I saw
The baby scaling
The ceiling and walls
We watched that high wire wonder
And it looked like he might fall
What we cradled in our futures
I can't recall
A day out at the zoo
A suburban carpark
That we drove to
Queuing for ages
In the blazing hot sun
Waiting to see the
Orangutans
I watched that baby climbing
And it looked like he might fall
It was all grace and no danger or fear at all
Our faces pressed up
Against the glass
I just had a second
To take my glance
Before the next one
Some other person could see
Movements so graceful
So peaceful and free
I saw the long haired old boy
And I thought 'what would he say?'
If the worry for the small ones kept him awake?
Now its winter I'm on the phone
Something wild
Has happened
So I remember
The moment I saw
The baby scaling
The ceiling and walls
We watched that high wire wonder
And it looked like he might fall
What we cradled in our futures
I can't recall
