Who I Was (Montana Memories)

Born in the spring of '34
Her family moved to the plains during the war
The oldest of five she raised them like they were her own
Teaching them right from wrong

Married in the fall of '55
Spent three score and more right by his side
These last few years now she's lost her memory
But she can still recite every line of Psalm 23

Every now and then a song comes on
Her face lights up and she'll sing along
And tell us some Montana memory
She asks us, "Where is grandpa?" and
We tell her he's up with the Lord
But she knows cause he's the angel in her dream
And she can't wait to meet him up above
She said, "I might forget just who I am but please
Remember Who I Was."

Smoked a pack of Pall Malls in a day
Went to bed with Pond's Cream on her face
Would only buy it if the money in the mattress could afford it
Always took the time to press her dress on Sunday morning

Every now and then a song comes on
Her face lights up and she'll sing along
And tell us some Montana memory
She asks us, "Where is grandpa?" and
We tell her he's up with the Lord
But she knows cause he's the angel in her dream
And she can't wait to meet him up above
She said, "I might forget just who I am but please
Remember Who I Was."

She's got cold hands and a warm heart
A quick smile but is slow to part from holding you
When it's time to go
Every now and then a song comes on
Her face lights up and she'll sing along
And tell us some Montana memory
She asks us, "Where is grandpa?" and
We tell her he's up with the Lord
But she knows cause he's the angel in her dream
And she can't wait to meet him up above
She said, "I might forget just who I am but please
Remember Who I Was."

She said, "I might forget just who I am but please
Remember Who I Was."
