Troy

I wouldn't call Troy and I close
But we always made a point to say hello
I'd see him on his bicycle
Almost every day
I'd smile and he'd wave
We'd both go about our day

It's far too often
I find the children of my school days
Have tucked themselves away
Safe and hidden
In the hills from which they came
Where they think they cannot lose or fail

If it wasn't about our neighborhood
We hadn't much to say
Though he lived around the corner
It was a very different place
Troy was lost to circumstance
He never found his way
It's the universe that's wicked
If there's anyone to blame

It's far too often
I find the children of my schools days
Have tucked themselves away
Safe and hidden
In the hills from which they came
Where they think they cannot lose or fail

This was fifteen years ago
But I still visit home
And I'm sure to wave hello
To Troy upon his bicycle
