Sky

Let's read the last page in this book
Let's see how it ends
Let's wrap up in words that we took
From a poet's broken lens

I hope that the ending is happy
But that's not what I really believe
For this specter only ferries one soul
That's how we all leave

Let's write one more verse together
Just a sweet simple rhyme
We can sing of the storms that we've weathered
We can pine for more time

But the couplet is cursed and what's worse
We are frightened of what we might say
And this scrivener just ran out of ink
And the paper's torn anyway

Let's add one more drop of paint
There's still space on the wall
Our brushes are frayed and dismayed
But our mural won't fall

And this picture of you where you're laughing at heavens
That promised to always be blue
Well that smile that I stole from your soul
It looks better on you

And the stars may ignore us and fizzle and die
On the cusp of time's smoldering sigh
But this ladder's still propped on the moon
There's still room in the sky

Yes, I'll meet you up on our moon
I'll see you in our sky
