Blue Violets

We were living in a painting
A picturesque summer of peach and pink
Sweet and supple, free and fluid
As delicate as flower petals dancing along a stream
It wasn't the seaside picnics or the rooftop conversations
That defined our summer
It was the blue violets, the ones I gave you
It's funny how flowers can define a season
They were so temporary
Temporary, yet beautiful

We were sipping cherry wine
In the warmth of summertime
I painted strawberry skies
So picturesque, you glowed gold in my eyes

Sugar heart, you were my
Archangel, muse of sweet dreams
But my dreams
They tend not to last

I spent our last summer painting
Pink skies and made-up faces
But I swore your portrait was real
You looked like an angel
Blue violets all tangled in your hair
But they blew away in the autumn air

Swimming in lakes of moonlight
As we danced from day to night
Bright colours turned to black
So picturesque, but all full moons must set

Sunshine heart, you were my
Archangel, muse of sweet dreams
But my dreams
They tend not to last

I spent our last summer painting
Pink skies and made-up faces
But I swore your portrait was real
You looked like an angel
Blue violets all tangled in your hair
But they blew away in the autumn air

Each sunset said goodbye
Each violet fell and died
Some loves are only meant for the summer

I spent our last summer painting
Pink skies and made-up faces
But I swore your portrait was real
You looked like an angel
Blue violets all tangled in your hair
But you blew away in the autumn air

(Violets are blue)
Seasons, never the same as the last
(Oh violets are blue)
New skies, new flowers, new people
(Oh violets are blue)
Moments are temporary, not everlasting
(Oh summer's so sweet)
Temporary yet beautiful, temporary and beautiful
As your bouquet of blue violets wilted
Our sweet summer came to an end
