SNCC (feat. Laparee Young)
But the sit-in movement had already started in Greensboro, North Carolina
A month before on February 1st
On that particular day, four friends
Not much older than you and your friends
Went downtown to get a cup of coffee but the waitress wouldn't serve them
Used to be a law that said some people could be free and some couldn't
It was called segregation
It said white people and black people couldn't eat together
Couldn't go to school together or live in the same neighborhoods
Or go to the same stores
They even had signs posted everywhere
So you'd know where you were supposed to go
It was a bad law, but it was still the law
And you could get taken to jail if you broke it
You might get beaten up or lose your job
That's why we had to change things
Those four friends
They started a group called the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee
We just called it "SNCC"
And the movement they started that day changed the history of this country
