We All Pray

Millions lives were at stake when they met by that lake
In an old German house in the snow
We can only regret and must never forget
The depths to which man can go

A plan was hatched to completely detach
One race from the face of this earth
A treacherous game with one common aim
Destroy any chance of rebirth

We may be broken hearted, left in bits
Revenge may have a sweet taste on our lips

It's not enough to fight hate with hate
It's not enough to trust in only fate
It's not enough to hold a loaded gun
Because we all pray to see the morning sun

One word from Berlin, the troops were brought in
Children were marched through the streets
Herded like cattle, ill prepared for the battle
Drenched as the rain fell in sheets
Tortured if caught, shot if they fought
Any plan to escape doomed to fail
With the deed almost done, they had nowhere to run
No strength for a sting in the tail

It makes my heart bleed whenever I read
Of atrocities committed in fear
We must surely learn from the fires that burned
But that isn't the message I hear

Where's the time gone, over 60 years on
And we self destruct just the same
Innocence punished, blindness encouraged
A martyr's 10 seconds of fame

The message was sent but the wounds never mend
Must fight this need to cause hurt
From sleep we awake, are we real? Are we fake?
Frailties leave action inert
Can't understand the cruelty of man
The dark side of every good soul
The power we crave from the birth to the grave
There's a devil lying deep in us all
It doesn't bode well when we send planes to hell
Feel like hiding and bolting the door
How far have we come and what needs to be done
So those chimneys don't smoke anymore
