A Poem For Night Time
Now at last, this complicated day is done once more
And our busy world winds down as we close our every door
Again, we gingerly step into that private place
Alone and on the run from all the turmoil we cannot face
Goodnight to all our dear family and friends
As the lights dim down and this day finally ends
Please, Night time, let me rest my troubled mind
Let me feel my heart stop racing
A little tranquillity might I find
While all good children kneel beside their beds in prayer
Our ever - puzzled minds are free to wander here and there
At least, mums and dads know they have tried their very best
But we still ask, did we make it, did we pass the test
Presently, we shall be lying quietly asleep
And nocturnal predators will walk their deathly creep
Our eyes are closed and only our breath is not yet silent
But mother nature - alas she is becoming violent
Snow and thunder crashing hail and dingy rain
Nature steals her prey and reclaims their heartfelt pain
For this clever vixen allows herself no noble sacrifice
A stab in the dark, one life, a single throw of the dice
The silhouette of a cunning wolf creeps gingerly across a rocky glassy moon
While a desperate vulture pecks ravenously through scraps, discarded far too soon
And yet more rats scurry along a wet and leafy forest floor
As we start to toss and turn while our dreams dance gaily along once more
You see, the proud, the fierce, the ever-desolate king of night
And the generous, free spirited, ever-enlightened queen of day
Never will meet, nor take tea in their regal palace room
Till dawn breaks and our nightmares move passively away
Because all our dreams and all our worst fears are united as one at last
Now that every door has opened to blend the present with the past
But now that morning sends her narrowed beams of light through the curtained window
We are finally at liberty to leave behind our fears from that night long ago
Indeed, while the stars beam light down on very house
And one lonesome cat sits eyeing up a solitary mouse
We must shut away our dreams with lock and key
And return to our everyday responsibility
And our busy world winds down as we close our every door
Again, we gingerly step into that private place
Alone and on the run from all the turmoil we cannot face
Goodnight to all our dear family and friends
As the lights dim down and this day finally ends
Please, Night time, let me rest my troubled mind
Let me feel my heart stop racing
A little tranquillity might I find
While all good children kneel beside their beds in prayer
Our ever - puzzled minds are free to wander here and there
