Morning Light

It ain't a short list of things that I gotta do
Searching around town for a job will take the life outta you
It's a real bear's ass to get up in the morning
You gotta lean into the dawn as the days get shorter
If you can see your own breath in the cold winter light
Hold on, man. You're doing just fine.

The other night I went to a show, and nearly lost my mind
Got flushed out by the words of a man who was hollow inside
And all the people in the crowd, they knew his songs by heart
Some fella talked down to me for not singing my part
I left feeling beat up as my old tennis shoes
But all those people have probably felt that way too

My hometown was never a place I wanted to stay
But I stuck around like old milk on a shelf past its "sell-by" date
I finally packed up my car, put the rubber to the dirt
Saw the skyline in the rearview and flipped that city the bird
Staying one place too long, I was bound to get hurt
It seems my hometown gave me the middle finger first
