Hit and Run

When I walk away
All the darkness stays
Haven't felt awake for a long time
And I feel the shame
Washing over me
As I kneel and pray
Don't be afraid
It was a mistake
No one saw a thing
It was all a dream
But I can't shake the feeling that
The devil's watching me

Swerving lanes in this pouring rain
One too many shots that I overdrank
Hoping I can make it safe
This state mind I can't explain
So I take a backroad, dimly lit
Won't get caught by police and shit
But everything changed in the blink of an eye
What the fuck did I hit
Foot on the brake as my mind goes blank
Heartbeat louder than the outside rain
As I watch it wash away the blood stains
Maybe I just hallucinated
Step outside but I see it clear
Broken, bloodied, but breathing air
Hoping that I help him but
I stand frozen here in fear
What do I do, there's no one else here
I panic and see that no cameras are near
I flee to my car, so guilty but scared
I cannot get caught, I say quick prayer
Look at the rearview as I leave the scene
He fades in the dark, I no longer see him
But right as try to breath sigh of relief
I feel the chills like he's been following me
Nah, what can I do
If I turn myself in, then my life is through
I get that it's sad that the man had to die
A life is a life and I know it ain't right
But he was just homeless, no kids and no wife
While I got my sights on a future that's bright
I gotta fight to erase this mistake
This just the guilt that I'll take to my grave

And a man was killed in a hit and run collision
Early this morning near *** Road and *** Avenue
According to *** Police
They arrived to the scene around one AM
Where they found an adult male
In the roadway with some serious injuries
Now despite life-saving reports
The victim died there at the scene
Police say the driver took off
Before officers arrived

Don't be afraid
It was a mistake
