Never Date A Writer

There's a version of you in somebody's head
Saying mean things that you never said
Cruel and unusual dummy by design
Mouth filled up with somebody else's lines

Nothing you do, nothing you say
Could ever make them view you in another way
They kept the worst most toxic part of you
And that's the part they talk to

Never date a writer, never be a muse
Everything is copy, every trauma gets reused
They'll control the narrative, you'll feel misunderstood
Never date a writer, especially if they're good

Everybody wants to own the goodbye, everybody wants to be right
So if you don't look like the good guy, put the story down in black and white
And you write and you write 'til your right

Blood on the page and the ink's still wet
And they don't forgive and they don't forget
They only remember the worst of you
The facts are wrong but it still feels true

Never date a writer, they're not trying to be mean
But you'll end up an index card on the corkboard of their dream
Sure when you're together, things will feel just fine
But you were not together, you were research the whole time

Everybody wants to own the good-bye, everybody wants to be right
So if you don't look like the good guy, put the story down in black and white
And you write and you write 'til your right

It's your right to work through your life with your art
But I've heard every word pull us further apart
And the more we put it down in lines, the more the facts get blurred
We don't want love, we want the last word

So you read the book or you see the play
And you see yourself in the words they say
They stole your breath and they made their art
And they wrote their truth and they broke your heart

So never date a writer, and I'm a writer too
I'll wring you out for feelings, 'cause that's just what I do
Sharing all my troubles, for followers and cash
The pain end up in print, and the truth goes in the trash

Everybody wants to own the good-bye, everybody wants to be right
So if you don't look like the good guy, put the story down in black and white
You write and you write and you write and you write
And you write and you write 'til your right
