For the Sake of Humankind

I remember being 12 and wearing my heart on my sleeve
Thinking I could be a hero, save myself from misery
Other people stole that dream saying I was too naive
When you get older, then you'll see

Almost 18, kinda wiser but I never changed my mind
Stupidly pure like a kid who can't tell black apart from white
Nevertheless, I grew up, lived and learned an awful lot
Let me tell you what

Now I know the real world is wide
And while loving hurts, it makes you feel alive
'Cause that's how people are
We seek what we can't find
And cut our wings so the other learns to fly
For the sake of humankind

Guess some folks just didn't need to go through hell like many did
Lived a silver-plattered life and somehow earned their heaven still
I'm afraid it's what it is, the plebs never get to know bliss
You'll get over this

But I'm tired of seeing the world through a foreigner's lenses
And I wonder if I were to bloom behind white picket fences
And among rose-tinted glasses, pretty ballrooms made of plastic
Would reality be this drastic?

Now I know the real world is wide
And while loving hurts, it makes you feel alive
'Cause that's how people are
We seek what we can't find
And cut our wings so the other learns to fly
For the sake of humankind

The lows matter just as much as the highs
All the rocks I tripped over made me rise
Even if the clocks took their sweet, sweet time
I healed alright

Now I know tomorrow's always bright
And my innocence is what keeps me alive
And no matter what, I'll seek until I find
The remains of my broken wings and fly
For the sake of humankind
