A Taste of Yesterday

The places that were joyful once
Now empty and deserted
The street once filled with greeting smiles
Now bids its guests farewell
And you and I bear witness to the fading of our memories
And all we see around us is a taste of yesterday

When we were children how we tried
To reach out to the future
Not doubting for a second
That it all would be ok
And yet we'd never realized we'd leave the past behind us
And all we'd see around us a mere taste of yesterday

And oh, looking back to then
I wonder if you, too, feel the same as I do
And oh, do you remember still
The dusty window sill
On which we sat and reminisced til sunrise

I wonder which traditions of
The past are still remembered
If anybody clung to them
Or left them all behind
I wish that I could fish them out from waters of their memories
And you and I could get a taste of all their yesterdays

And oh, looking back to then
I wonder if you, too, contemplate as I do
And oh, do you remember still
The dusty window sill
On which we sat and reminisced til sunrise

The children of future will
Pass down their new traditions
Just as the kids of long ago
Had their own games as well
And maybe one day we will see them playing and remember
That you and I can always find that taste of yesterday
