Pretend

I've helped you through the mud
Sheltered you in the rain
Haven't you noticed what I've done
To help you through the pain?

I guess I should just get used to
Being used
And getting no gratitude.

I just want, someone to care
Or someone there
for me
And not only when they want to be

Is this what I get
For trying to be a good friend?
Now and then, I lie
When people ask "how you been?"
So, the next time if you hear me laugh
It's probably pretend

I'll admit it isn't fun
But I don't like to complain
Being the 'positive one'
Can really drive you insane
But there's nothing,
I can do
When that's all they expect from you

I just want, someone to care
Or someone there
For me
And not only when I'm happy

Is this what I get
For trying to be a good friend?
Now and then, I lie
When people ask "how you been?"
And I don't know when
I'll be myself again
So, the next time you see me smile
It's probably pretend

Oh, the next time you see me smile
Just know it's pretend
