Solitaire

This winter I walked through the western woods
And I saw a songbird trying hard as he could
To call out the name of a precious old flame
But the jealous disdain was just too much to tame
To this day I remember just what the bird said
The tone of his voice still rings in my head
It shone through the pity and shame and regret
Alone, once again, with his blame and his nest

And he sings
Oh lord, he sings

Why did you have to fly away?
Is there anything I could have done?
Or am I just a mess with a dream in his head
And a scheme to keep chasing the sun?
Why did you have to fly away?
Is there anything I could have done?
Or am I just a mess with a dream in his head
And a scheme to keep chasing the sun?

The solitaire sings for the fools and the kings
In one hand, a bottle, in the other, a ring
On a quest for true love but it's never enough
'Cause he knows who he wants but she'll never turn up
And, in him, I see a little bit of myself
Some sin and some longing, the urge to rebel
I cling to his song and always sing along
'Cause it makes me feel strong when I know I'm all wrong

And we sing
Oh lord, we sing

Why did you have to fly away?
Is there anything I could have done?
Or am I just a mess with a dream in his head
And a scheme to keep chasing the sun?
Why did you have to fly away?
Is there anything I could have done?
Or am I just a mess with a dream in his head
And a scheme to keep chasing the sun?
