Mannequins

So many mannequins waiting to be dressed up and put on display
Like the dead at a funeral with make-up to hide their decay
But all the pretty pictures you share for everyone to see
They won't change you they aren't allowed to see
So when the camera is turned off and you're all alone
The pretending is over and you have to face what is known
What's staring back at you in the mirror makes you feel like shit
Because in your heart you know there is no escape from it
You just want the world to love you like you cannot even love yourself
But you can't even convince you of the lies you feed everyone else

It's all coming apart when you look inside
Who you wish you could be has already died
Your friends only love you for who you are not
But when you're hurting you're left to rot
Because not even the world cares if you end
There's just no one with a hand to lend
The little cuts on your arms are a cry for help never heard
A voice lost in the echo of the absurd
As you sit awake in the crushing night
Giving up on ever finding any light

Everybody wants to be someone
Because they cannot accept who they are
We are made of pixels in a digital world
Where everyone wants to be a star
Vicarious lives seeking validation
Through the approval of strangers
Like little moths trapped in glass containers
Everyone seems to be afraid they are not good enough
It's fashionable to play victim
And pretend you have it so fucking rough
But where do you run to hide from all your fears
When you live in a house made entirely of mirrors
