In the Shadows

In the city streets
Where the shadows come to life
People passing by
And I'm hiding in plain sight

Roamed a million miles
To be trapped in my designs
Live a lonesome life
A heavy heart a burdened mind

And you may not see
What's left of all that I could be
Ain't not much left here where I'm lying
For once I fought for freedom from the juggernaut
Of phantoms pulling down my peace of mind
Only to slide
To the shadows
Hiding in the shadows

I'm a severed tie
Cut adrift and cast aside
To the outer fringes
Where the dispossessed reside

You may recognize
From the corner of your eye
I'm a raw reflection
Of yourself in trying times

In the days of yore
I strode upon a distant shore
Hopeful of the heights that I might climb
But a fearsome host of crooked kings and hungry ghosts
Took a wrecking ball to all that once was mine
And left me lying
In the shadows
Lying in the shadows

In the dire straights
Of sleeping over subway grates
And scrounging for salvation in a dime
Just a spark of hope is all that's holding me afloat
But the blindness of the stranger passing by
Keeps me confined
To the shadows
Hiding in the shadows
