Roses and Reality

The authors and the poets
Are synonymous with saints
Immortalized by stories and their tales of human ache
They tell us of the glory of a promised holy land
Simultaneously in our reach but out of hand

Cinderella turned herself a servant to a queen
Happily ever after in another fantasy
Stories passed and stories told until the end of time
Writing our own narratives so we don't lose our minds

Loving seems so easy
When you look to fairy tales
A heart of gold happens to stumble
On a soul that"s frail
But those lessons don't work when you apply them to our lives
Accounting for the sufferings unique to humankind

Like the knowledge that we'll die and lie and cheat along the way
And there's men who beat their wives because a woman's easy prey
Every day that passes by somebody dies alone
Somebody who probably loved someone in their own time
They couldn't have imagined

How
Why me
How'd it happen to us
Was it destined to be
How
Why me
We were falling apart
I was blind to see

So long
Goodbye
We dug our well
We ran it dry
So long
To you and me
Maybe for knowing you I've grown

So long
Goodbye
We dug our well
We ran it dry
So long
To you and me
Maybe for knowing you I've grown

So treasure all your moments
That are spent in states of bliss
I've learned there's nothing more redeeming
Than an honest woman's kiss

For now I've lost my lover
I have come to realize
That roses and reality
Are seldom intertwined
