Either Coast

We're going to spend the winter in
The same three places we spent spring
We're going to find it hard to remember
Too much of anything in between
When everything feels temporary
And all of the edges start to blur
We stick to habit, still trying to aim
For the center in a straight line
But the center's obscured

When it's time to leave again
Mark a map with colored rope
Then head up to the attic
Dig out a few favorite ghosts
See which one misses us the most

For the most part we're still fine
We're just exhausted and numb from the cost
And mostly it's all the same symptoms
Only this time from an external cause
We spent a few days alone on the floor
Trying to recover from the last disaster
We stand to reason or sit disconnected
From all sense and sensation
We sputter toward the sound

When it's time to leave again
Mark a map with colored rope
Then head up to the attic
Dig out a few favorite ghosts
When momentum shifts again
We could either coast or crash
Stumble down to the basement
Set a fire to all the old asks
Try not to collapse in the ash
