The New Normal (What Have You Done?)

Lovers always feel the world has stopped
Now it seems as though it has
Empty sidewalks, suspended dreams
Each little world looking through the glass

Maybe all the world is just in love
And hiding from our eyes
Diving deeply within themselves
To find their hidden surprise

It can seem like it will never end
We stay inside and just pretend
But the days of our confinement are numbered
What have you done while the world slumbered

A siren sings about a life
That's strapped down to a gurney
Traveling quickly to find out
If they get to continue their journey

Bells are ringing in the distance
It must be seven o'clock
People applaud those giving resistance
To an increased count on the loading dock

It can seem like it will never end
We stay inside, stream and pretend
But the days of our confinement are numbered
What have you done while the world slumbered

Everyone is wearing a mask
As the atmosphere clears
In India they can see Mount Everest
For the first time in years

Some animals have taken back
What used to be their home
Thinkin' maybe all those furless chimps
Will finally leave us alone

It can seem like it will never end
We stay inside, post and pretend
But the days of our confinement are numbered
What have you done while the world slumbered

And if you're non-essential
And lucky enough to eat
You can use this time apart
As a personal retreat

We have a chance to change our dance
Let your quiet mind be your tutor
Each little room a personal womb
Gestating the future

It can seem like it will never end
We stay inside, dream and pretend
But the days of our confinement are numbered
What have you done while the world slumbered

The question we must ask ourselves
Can we rethink what's moral
Let's dream ourselves a better world
And make it the new normal

What have you done while the world slumbered
